By itself it is a great vegetarian dish, but as most vegetable stews in Hungary, green pea stew is generally served with some kind of meat (eg. meatballs, frankfurters) or fried egg.
Green pea stew can be prepared using fresh or frozen peas. Take attention not to overcook the vegetable. Cooking time might vary depending on what type of green pea you are using.

Green pea stew
Ingredients
- 6 ½ cups green pea 900 g
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 2 tbsp chopped parsley
- 3 ½ tbsp flour
- 1 ¼ cups water 300 ml
- 1 cup milk 240 ml
- 1 tsp sugar
- ½ tsp salt
Instructions
- Sautée the green peas in vegetable oil over medium heat until almost tender. This takes between 5-10 minutes depending on the type of your green peas.
- Add chopped parsley, salt, sugar and flour. Stir and let it cook for another minute.
- Add water then milk, stir. Cook for 3-4 minutes over low heat, stirring occasionally.
