How to prepare Caprese Salad

  1. The preparation method of Caprese Salad is actually infinitely simple. Take a medium mozzarella ball – it usually makes about 125 g – and a same sized tasty ripe tomato and cut them both into ¼ inch slices. To make it easier, place your tomato stem-side down on a cutting board and cut it vertically. Afterward you can remove stem pieces from the slices in the middle. Arrange on a plate by altering them. Variations on the Caprese Salad

There are countless variations on this basic recipe. It is usually sprinkled with balsamic vinegar, or you can get an even better flavor if you use a thick syrupy balsamic vinegar reduction. Buy it in an excellent grocery store, or you can do it on your own; boil a glass of quality balsamic vinegar with a teaspoon of sugar reduce the heat and let it simmer until it has reduced by half or third. That’s what I used to flavor it, you can see how dark, chocolate-kind of sauce it has become. You can add pepper, bigger or more basil leaves, or sprinkle with dried basil leaves. Once I tasted it with ruccola over its top, it was also delicious.

You can also vary this salad by changing the way you serve it. If you prepare insalata caprese, the only unwritten rule is to use the same-sized tomato and mozzarella slices. It’s a common version to use mozzarella balls and cherry tomatoes. Take small basil leaves or halve them lengthwise and spear your ingredients by using a toothpick. This way you can easily create a perfect cocktail party dish, what’s more it features the colors of the Italian flag. There’s another traditional way to prepare ingredients; by slicing tomatoes and mozzarella into 1/3 inch cubes, and serve it on a plate as salad.

The origin of caprese salad

According to the article of Dining Chicago , the origin of caprese salad can’t be accurately captured, and as it’s a really simple dish, it’s also impossible to define. What is certain is that that its popularity soared after it was served up to the gourmand King Farouk of Egypt (who was a king in exile) in the 1950’s on the island of Capri, in the Grand Hotel Quisisana.
